Yarn choice is very important for this hat. Many yarns labeled as “super bulky” are closer to bulky when worked in this pattern. Check your gauge before you start.

YARN: Super bulky weight, approximately 110 yards

   Yarns that work well:

  • Lion Brand, Wool-Ease Thick and Quick
  • Knit Picks, Tuff Puff
  • Malabrigo, Rasta

NEEDLES:

  • US 10.5 circular needles
  • US 13 circular needles
  • US 13 double-pointed needles
  • Cable needle

GAUGE: 3” x 3” – 12 sts x 12 rows, in K1P1 (relaxed, not stretched) using US 10.5 needles. In my swatch below (using Knit Picks Tuff Puff), the last row got twisted. Ignore that. This is meant to show what the 3” x 3” swatch should look like.

STITCH ABBREVIATIONS:

  • K – knit
  • P – purl
  • C2F – move 1 stitch to the cable needle, hold in front, knit 1 from left needle, knit stitch on cable needle.
  • C2B – move 1 stitch to the cable needle, hold in back, knit 1 from left needle, knit stitch on cable needle.
  • C6F – move 3 stitches to the cable needle, hold in front, knit 3 from left needle, knit stitches on cable needle.
  • SSK – slip slip knit
  • K2tog – knit two stitches together
  • P2tog/P3tog – purl two/three stitches together

STARTING with US 10.5 circular needles

Cast on 56 stitches using a stretchy cast on. Join in circle, being careful not to twist stitches. Place marker. Move the marker as the work progresses keeping the first stitch of the round in the same position.

Stitch K1P1 ribbing until brim measures desired length. The brim in the examples is 1.5”.
